#NLSEXTERNSHIP CHALLENGE - THREE HARD PILLS TO SWALLOW

The truth is that there is really nothing great about externship except that you are free from the hassles of law school.

In order to make the best of your externship period take to heart these three truths!

1. Law is actually quite boring, forget all the nonsense you see in 'suits' or 'the good fight'. The law as practiced in reality is full of adjournments and is extremely methodical. But once in a while, you see something that rekindles the desire to be a lawyer, mine was the case of bianca ojukwu.

2. Being a lawyer doesn't automatically tip you to be a success in life, during externship I saw all sorts of lawyers. You will see things you can't unsee, a bar one friend of mine once told me that she didn't know lawyers in Nigeria were allowed to wear 'brown' shirts to court, I too was confused, it was at a closer look that I realised that this lawyer's shirt was once 'white', but eventually you will see lawyers who will ginger you for success, people whose English isn't better than yours and you will realise you can be successful in this profession.

3.You will get a taste of the real world, you will wake up early to go to court /chambers. You will take public transport and fight with conductors or whatever. Not a good experience at all, but that will be your reality if you don't have a car, or after using uber for two weeks straight, you realise the folly in that. (best thing you and a couple of friends pair together and hire a cab).

The main thing about externship is reflection, you will need to reflect if you truly ready for your bar exams, reflect on whether you actually want to practice law, reflect on whether you have the patience to practice law. When you are done reflecting, take decisions based on your reflections. If you are true to yourself, the remaining part of law school will be a breeze and your life will be easier.
