Externship or Exile

We are all excited to be done with classes and to head home for the holidays. However, many of us are lost and confused as regards the Externship program. How should we fill the log books, what happens when court does not sit? What happens when I don't come to court?

Take a few minutes to study these guidelines and prevent mistakes when filling your log book.

The Almighty Log Book 

-pages of the logbook should be numbered serially and dated at the top.

- page 1 should contain the personal details of the extern.

- page 2 should contain the goals of the Externship  programme.

- page 3 should contain instructions.

- page 4 should contain the code of conduct for externs.

- page 5 and odd pages should contain time logged activities 

- page 6 even page and all subsequent even pages should contain reflections on only one activity per day. 

- Each day's reflection should not be more than one page.

- each extern should sign immediately below the last entry.

- extern shall not endorse court not sitting in his/her logbooks. Where a court is not sitting extern must go to the nearest court that is in session

     Analysis. Challenges.problems. Fears or expectations. 

      Reflection/comments- what could they have done better, were you disappointed? Were your expectations met.

Content of the portfolio

1. 2 log books 

2. Two reflective essays - the management and organization
  of the law firm I was placed, an ethical dilemma.

3. Confidential external evaluation report from the law firm field supervisor

4. Two evaluation/ survey forms completed by the extern.

5. Evidence of engagement in activities such as copies of legal opinion, letters, reports, writ, pleadings.

Take Note

- the court did not seat on public holiday. State the effects of the court not sitting on the legal system.

- field supervisors are to forward signed evaluation report to the director general of the school

- don't use tipex 

- Not mandatory for field supervisors to pay. Your not supposed to foot the bill of the
law firm. 

- wear your regulation wear everyday!!!
